Phocuswright's U.S. Consumer Travel Report 2021 series provides a snapshot of consumer behavior and sentiment as COVID-19 continues to change the world. Though the global pandemic greatly curtailed U.S. leisure travel in 2020 and 2021, Americans are eager to travel and will do so again, just as they did following 9/11 and the global financial crisis.
In 2020, those who did opt to travel planned their trips differently. With a longer research stage and more all-online bookings, U.S. consumers made significant changes to their shopping behaviors. One example was the rise in popularity of supplier and DMO websites, as travelers needed to ensure clarity and monitor changes related to COVID policies and local regulations.
