The New Nomads: Work and Play From Anywhere
As lockdowns spread around the globe in 2020, most workers who could do so shifted to remote, online work. Newly able to engage in work or school from anywhere, a growing share of travelers embraced the chance to combine work and leisure in a new destination. Coined digital nomads, these individuals that blend work and leisure travel fall into two distinct groups of traveling professionals that engage in the modern nomadic lifestyle.
While a wide range of professionals engage in the digital nomad lifestyle, the typical traveler profile may be surprising. This report, based on a comprehensive survey of these “New Nomads,” explores traveler behaviors, demographics and attitudes regarding the work-and-travel hybrid lifestyle. What these changes mean for industry and travelers is also explored, providing a detailed look at the digital nomad population, traveler motivations and prospects for the future.
