In 2021, the U.S. travel industry finally showed signs of life again, with consumers eager to jump back in. According to Phocuswright’s latest travel research report U.S. Consumer Travel 2022: An Overview, traveler numbers rebounded strongly, reaching parity with 2019 although some areas are still lagging. Looking forward, U.S. travelers anticipate that their travel behavior will remain stable, or even increase over the coming 12 months.

Significantly more travelers expect to take domestic trips in 2022 and beyond, but international trips will be slower to return. Across age categories, fewer travelers report uncertainty or flat out refusal to travel in upcoming months.

Three in 10 travelers expect to take more domestic trips and two in 10 expect more international trips. Younger travelers have more bullish expectations for international travel, while older travelers are significantly more uncertain about it.

Expect the recovery to continue to strengthen, as travelers take more, longer and pricier trips. Once again, younger travelers are driving the expected increases in budget and trip length.

Part of the U.S. Consumer Travel Report 2022 series, this report provides baseline data and analysis on U.S. travel demand and traveler considerations going forward, serving as a benchmark as travel companies navigate the recovery.
