Online Travel Bounces with Consumer Confidence

Thanks to improvement in consumer confidence, the online travel industry has seen rising stocks and improved conditions for air and hotel suppliers in our industry's ecosystem. That's because Americans have defied expectations by continuing to spend money even as their gasoline bills skyrocket. Online air transactions were up 6% in February, and hotel revenue per available room (RevPAR) climbed, according to Phocuswright's recent TravelStats. Of particular interest to travel sellers is the 11% gain in early-2012 spending at U.S. restaurants, which shows that even the most discretionary items in consumers' budgets are holding up for now. In addition, investors were gratified as the Greek debt bomb was rolled down the road another year or two by the latest restructuring deal, which will write off more than half of the debt Greece owed to banks and hedge funds.

One of several publications that comprise Phocuswright's Money Edition Research Subscription, TravelStats combines significant metrics and analysis to deliver a concise yet complete update of travel industry trends and performance. The monthly report features brief commentary and key statistics on the air and hotel sectors, along with the broader online travel ecosystem. In addition to TravelStats, the Money Edition includes a range of regular publications and proprietary stock indexes, all focused on the financial side of the online travel space. The Money Edition is designed to help travel companies and investors "follow the money" and make smart, strategic decisions.
