Digital Travel in Asia Pacific 2016: Beyond Potential

After more than 20 years since launching The Phocuswright Conference – the largest gathering of senior executives in digital and travel from around the world – Phocuswright is kicking off its inaugural India conference 21 - 22 April 2016, to delve into the key trends transforming travel across Asia Pacific.

As we began to prepare for Phocuswright India, I went through all of our research on the online travel market in Asia Pacific, going all the way back to our first study of the region in 2002, to see how much it has changed.

And has it changed! Online travel in Asia Pacific was just US$4.8 billion in 2002. The entirety of online bookings in the region amounted to less than one fifth of that in the U.S. But fast forward to 2016, and the APAC online travel market is approaching $140 billion and is nearly as large as the U.S. – and growing much faster.

For far too long, the travel industry has framed the discussion around Asia Pacific as one of potential. But that can no longer be the case. Global travel's center of gravity is quickly moving eastward. And the story is only just underway.

This slide deck outlines the major shifts in travel and digital across Asia Pacific over the past decade and a half, identifies five key themes that have driven this change, and looks to what's next for travel's largest regional marketplace.
