Americans' enduring passion for travel prevails, driven by high travel incidence

The U.S. travel population surged to its highest point ever in 2022. Remarkably, U.S. travelers continue to assign greater value to travel when compared to other discretionary expenditures like home improvements, dining/nightlife and electronics.

Thus, the U.S. travel market grew by 51% to $422 billion in 2022, as all segments registered double-digit revenue increases.

The majority of U.S. travelers stayed within the country whereas one third traveled internationally. Travel spend was up, due to slightly more and longer trips combined with increased costs.

Traveler/trip profile

  • Average U.S. traveler is 48 years old with $85,454 average household income.
  • There was an average of 2.3 people per leisure travel group.

  • 6.2-night average trip length.
  • $5,048 average total spent in past year;
