TOPIC: The OTA CEO Series: Roaming with a New Interface
Mark Schroeder is the co-founder and CEO of Home&Abroad, an application development company focused on providing pre-trip and destination services for travelers. Previously, Mr. Schroeder was the CEO of DigitalMed, a Tenet Healthcare-owned e-learning subsidiary. Prior to that he was the co-founder and CEO of e-vitro (1999), a human capital company specializing in providing online training and human capital services to nurses and allied health-care workers. Schroeder merged e-vitro into DigitalMed in 2000.
From 1995-1999, Schroeder was the founder and CEO of Digital Creators, one of the pioneer e-learning companies. At Digital Creators, Schroeder oversaw the development of hundreds of hours of e-learning courses, performance support systems, and expert and decision support systems for clients such as Citigroup, USAA, Motorola, EDS, Universal Studios, Northrup Grumman, the University of Colorado, GTE and others. The work of Digital Creators won top awards in the field, including an Invision Gold Medal at Comdex in 1996. Schroeder sold Digital Creators to Teletech Holdings in 1998.
From 1990 to 1998 Schroeder also served as a Lecturer in the Comparative Literature Department at the University of Colorado. He taught classes in the history of art, literature, philosophy, and in 1994 was one of the first teachers to offer classes in Digital Design. Schroeder received grants from the President’s Office, the Chancellor’s Office’s, the Dean’s Office, and IBM for his work in multimedia production. In 1995 he won a prestigious University of Colorado Teaching Award.
Schroeder received his M.A. in Comparative Literature from Columbia University in 1987. As an undergraduate, he attended the University of New Mexico, from which he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and with distinction in 1985.
A passion for teaching and education is the consistent theme throughout Schroeder’s professional career. He started teaching with the Upward Bound Program as an undergraduate at the University of New Mexico, and has taught at the University of Arizona and the University of Colorado. He has explored the history of pedagogy both in traditional formats as well as in new and emerging arenas. In 2002-2003, he and his wife, Carla, “roadschooled” their children while traveling around the world.
Schroeder sits on the Board of two technology companies. In his leisure time, he enjoys volunteer work, hiking, skiing, reading, and viewing independent films with his family. He is also an avid athlete, and has completed marathons as well as multi-sport events.
