Travel Innovation Summit- The Battle for Centre Stage
We are really excited to be participating in the PhoCusWright’s Travel Innovation Summit (PCW TIS). Rezgo has come a long way since its inception, we are gaining attention, building strategic partnerships and have a robust feature set that really sets us apart from our direct competition. Well I may be a little biased, and I realize that our competition at PCW TIS is not direct market competition. As we are competing for innovation and ingenuity, I thought I would do a brief review of the presenters at PCW TIS.

So Cheap, It's Almost Not Fare
Cheapflights has several features which help distinguish it from similar search engines, said Carroll Rheem, research director for Phocuswright, a travel research firm based in Sherman, Conn. The site's ability to find fares through what amounts to a blind search - allowing consumers to search for the best fare regardless of when the flight is or where it's heading - makes it unique, Rheem said. As does the fact that it allows searches by city pairs: Boston to Milwaukee, for example. And its ability to grab prices for a wide range of dates also sets it apart, she said. "It's like the impulse purchase at the grocery story," Rheem said. "They're trying to convince consumers who weren't sure they could travel that they have some options and ideas. What they do particularly well is helping people find the cheap flights."

Philip Wolf, president of PhoCusWright, an American-based travel industry research company, says all indicators suggest that the future of travel is the internet, yet only one in five trips is bought online in the Asia-Pacific region, half the rate of Europe and well behind the US. "Australia should be doing the same," says Wolf, who was in Australia to speak at the Tourism Futures conference on the Gold Coast. "2007 was the tipping point in America for internet travel with more than 50 per cent of both business and leisure travel bookings done seamlessly online." The same should be happening here, and now, Wolf argues. He says the Australian industry should stop blaming the Government for what it is or is not doing and look inwards for answers. "You need to do more with technology. The internet has provided a level playing field for all tourism operators around the world. It is such an opportunity but you have to harness it."

Rod Cuthbert of Viator was kind enough to invite me to a drinks event with PhoCusWright CEO Philip Wolf. Wolf was in Australia to attend the Tourism Futures conference on the Gold Coast...Philip gave an brief but interesting speech. Two things he said particularly stuck with me. Firstly he put an new spin on how to think about the battle between the big OTAs and meta-search/content companies...He then took this analysis a little further through taking us through PhoCusWright's current Perfect Storm thesis (The Perfect Storm: Search Shop Buy). It is one thing for us as an industry to have better means for classifying the models and categorisation for each competitor but do our customers care. We as an industry think about supplier sites, OTAs, Hotel Only, Meta/Zero, Affiliates, white-label, last minute, etc etc. But the consumers don't do any of this. All they think about is buying travel. On the whole the distinctions between the models and methodologies are meaningless to the consumer. Wolf encapsulated this through this comment "In our study of consumer behaviour a statistically significant number of consumers actually believe that they buy their travel from Google".

PhoCusWright: Agency Share Loss Slowing; GDS Decline to Continue
U.S. travel agents in 2007 sold about $107 billion in travel, or 38 percent of the total travel marketplace, according to new research from PhoCusWright. Although PhoCusWright projected that sales through travel agencies, excluding online agencies, would decline to 33 percent of the total market in 2009 because of channel shift among leisure bookers, the overall rate of share loss "has slowed." Driving more than $50 billion in sales, the largest 65 agencies account for more than half of the total travel agency market, the research group found. The remaining 23,000 agencies and home-based agents focus mainly on leisure travel. According to the "Travel Agency Distribution Landscape 2006-2009" report, vendor commissions generate 31 percent of revenues for corporate agencies while client fees drive 52 percent, global distribution system incentives provide 5 percent and "net rate markups" supply 6 percent. Profitability "now versus two years ago" is the same or better for 53 percent of corporate agencies, but worse for 42 percent, PhoCusWright found. Travel agencies in 2006 booked 72 percent of their sales through GDSs, but PhoCusWright expects that to fall to 67 percent in 2009 as Internet bookings rise to 21 percent from 16 percent. The firm predicted that agents would book 36 percent more hotel rooms online in 2009 than they did in 2006, with a 22 percent increase in online air bookings.

For Purchasing, the Next Strategic Sourcing Opportunity in Travel is Meetings Management
Tony Wagner, vice president of meetings and events, North America at Carlson Wagonlit Travel in Minneapolis, Minn., says a company can figure its meetings spend to be approximately 20–30% of its annual T&E (travel and entertainment) tab. As a definition for corporate meeting, he uses "more than 10 people traveling to a destination (or 10 room nights)." All told, the market for meetings in North America is approximately $75 billion, he says, basing this estimate on figures from a recent study by PhoCusWright in Sherman, Conn., for all types of meetings and events.

'Tourists Saying "No" to User-Generated Opinions' - Newsweek Reports
There are grumblings in the user generated review world. Newsweek reports that "the expert is back", and Charlotte Beal reports that there is an increase in 'choice fatigue' amongst tourists, and that "the world is too dangerous a place for faulty information". Returning from my Tips From The T-List sponsored blogger workshop at PhoCusWright@ITB, where we focussed on these issues has given me a greater appreciation for the conflict.

Adding to my opinion recorded in the video, I consider B2B travel blogs a valuable resource for leaders working in the travel industry, one they should use to keep abreast of what’s happening now and what will happen tomorrow on the web and how this will affect their business. As I mentioned, the purpose of this blog at least, is to add knowledge which, as Ram my fellow panelist mentioned, is different from information.

Thoughts on the PhoCusWright Bloggers Summit and Conference @ ITB
As I’m getting ready to go back home tomorrow, I have had some time to look back and try to summarize the experience of attending the Bloggers Summit and the PhoCusWright Conference @ ITB (as well as ITB itself). The Bloggers Summit brought together several eTourism bloggers from various parts of the world. Unfortunately, the sessions were so busy and bloggers’ schedules in some cases were so tight that I did not have time to meet all the bloggers who attended.

Second Day @ PhoCusWright ITB - OTAs Speak Out
An interesting session with the leaders of some of Europe’s leading OTAs including: Alan Josephs, MD ebookers.com, Ignacio Martos, CEO Opodo, Ian McCaig, CEO Lastminute.com, Jens-Uwe Parkitny, VP & MD Expedia.com Gmbh, Javier Perez-Tenessa, Founder eDreams Inc. During the session Philip Wolf conducted an informal survey to determine whether the audience felt that the OTAs were doing a good job of differentiating themselves from each other. The resounding response from the audience was that they were, infact, NOT doing a very good job of differentiating themselves. So what can the OTAs do to make themselves different from each other? Not surprisingly, none of the OTAs had an answer to this question. Why is this? In my opinion, the question of differentiation implies that the underlying business models are different, and since all the OTAs share the same underlying business model then there is very little they can do to truly differentiate themselves.

Travel Minds in the Snow
Some of the most sparkling travel minds are getting together at the Bloggers summit in Berlin. Bruces Rosard, VP Sales and Marketing of PhoCusWright welcomes us to the summit. A number of 25 bloggers are present, which is good number considering the snowy conditions. Philip Wolf, President and CEO of PhocusWright kicks off with a interesting story on travel. One of his themes is the long tail of travel, selling less of more. New shopping and comparison technology will dramatically change the travel industry, which already has been affected very much by radical changes in the past years. PPA/PPC is the new commission model. Not pay per acquisition that is, but pay per action. With acquisition being the highest form of action. But it is important not to focus on the business model but on the customers (it is the customer stupid!).

Actually no. These two quotes are from Henry Hartevelt, vice-president and principal analyst for travel at Forrester Research, and Joe Buhler, senior destination marketing analyst at PhoCusWright, two of the world's leading analysts of the online travel market. "This is certainly the time to focus on improved user experience over content," says Buhler. "There's often content/information overkill on travel sites and the user experience is disappointing. The expectations of today's online travel shopper are higher and need to be met if the industry is to develop at high rates."

Gaining Altitude in Turbulent Skies
According to data from travel research firm PhoCusWright, Expedia and its U.S. online counterparts saw gross bookings increase 50% in 2002. Overall U.S. travel bookings fell more than 8% that year...As of last year, according to PhoCusWright, Expedia properties had a 41% market share among U.S. online travel agencies. Travelocity was the next closest competitor with 23% share...It's not a trivial market. Last year, for the first time, a majority of travel (51%) was purchased online in the U.S., according to PhoCusWright. The firm expects online outlets to account for 60% of U.S. travel purchases by 2009...Despite the rapid growth, online travel still has a ways to go internationally. In Europe and the Asia-Pacific region just 32% and 15% of gross travel bookings, respectively, came through online channels, according to PhoCusWright.

PhoCusWright Reveals Online Travel Market Research
According to a new report from research group PhoCusWright, the US online leisure and unmanaged business travel market will surpass US$94bn (£48.1bn, 63.7bn euro) in 2007. PhoCusWright’s US Online Travel Overview Seventh Edition report examines both travel distribution and marketing rends in the US. It reveals that the online leisure and unmanaged business travel market comprises a third of the total travel market in the US. Total travel market is defined as being offline leisure and unmanaged business travel and on- and offline corporate travel. Vice president of research at PhoCusWright, Lorraine Sileo, said: “It’s interesting to note that while online travel’s growth continues to exceed that of the market as a whole, that growth has slowed compared to recent years. This is especially true for online travel agencies, which have seen their packaging sales slow considerably.” The report also contains details of the marketing trends in the US that are driving change within the travel industry as well as an analysis of travel agency developments, evolving technologies and consumer behaviou
